| | Hey did you catch this? PBS showed Dr. Zhivago over the weekend. Enjoyable. I don't think I've seen it as an adult and I don't think I could process it as a kid.
Besides the artistry of the back-drops, I also noticed the unique rhythm of the story. The length and dryness of russian stories is cliche but, and I've noticed this effect reading some asian authors, notably Ha Jin and Akira Yoshimura, the lives they are describing are far more controlled than any in the "West". The world revolves around smaller things which wield a bigger impact. While I have in me some love of the excess, I also think we miss a lot by not noticing the details.
